I had never spent the night on a boat so I was naturally worried about motion sickness since I knew I would be spending 4 days at sea, not touching foot on land until I was physically dragged off the boat, kicking and screaming, dreading the thought of getting back to reality. The morning of our flight from Toronto to Nassau, I decided to use two circular patches (placed behind my ears), used to help prevent motion sickness. Although I don't tend to get sick while on the water, I thought I would use them just to be safe. The last thing I wanted was for my vacation to be ruined because I was getting sick off the side of the boat...yuck! Needless to say, even with choppy waters on our last morning during out 4 hour ride back to Nassau, I managed to stay equalized. Not only did this make my trip more enjoyable but it also made falling asleep on the boat so tranquil from the subtle rocking motion made by the waves - put me to sleep like a baby. Z z z...
One of my favourite parts of the vacation was getting close to some sharks. I am an avid Shark Week fan and I truly think that sharks are so fascinating (from a far), so I was completely mesmerized by them. Each night, one of the crew members would let a chomp bag, usually filled with fish carcasses from our dinners, hang off of the aft (fancy boating lingo for 'back' of the boat) which was used to attract the sharks. Throughout the entire weekend, a nurse shark (fairly harmless since they don't have teeth) and one lemon shark (not as harmless since they do have teeth) would circle the boat during the day and try to get a bite of our chomp bag at night. This made for some interesting entertainment at night since the sharks were only a foot away from the boat lurking at the surface of the water.. Everyone would be looking over the edge of the boat for the sharks with the powerful underwater flashlights. However, watching the nurse shark circle the boat during the day made me a bit hesitant to jump into the water -- I learned to swim very very fast just assuming that it was always nearby.
The vacation ended way too quickly and I wish we had at least one more day on the crystal clear ocean, however, it was probably best that the trip ended when it did or else I would've burnt to a crisp. It was such an enjoyable weekend, allowing us all to fully recharge, making it a trip to remember. I must say that coming back home to Toronto was a bit of a shock to the body but the bright side was that the combination of my tan and sea legs made me feel like I was still on Gigi II floating off the coast of the islands.
