Having visited Paris in between my two trips to Washington, as I walked through the streets, I realized a striking resemblance between the architecture in Washington and France. I soon came to understand that a French architect by the name of Pierre Charles L'Enfant designed Washington. Therefore, many of the buildings in the city are generally low rise and highly detailed in stone with courtyards.
Washington is a beautiful city with a lot of things to do and see. With it being the main hub for American politics, one would assume that they would not feel safe in the city, however, I never felt unsafe due to the large presence of security. There are many security cameras outside of every major building and there are always subtle cops around. Although the heightened level of security might make some people worry, it made me feel very safe.
If you are visiting Washington for the first time, I definitely recommend booking a private car tour through your hotel. Doing this will allow you to pinpoint which attractions you would like to revisit with more time. Although there are many attractions within walking distance of each other, the vast majority of memorials are spread out across the city, so the convenience of a car tour is very beneficial. A very neat fact about Washington is that all of the museums are free to the public, so be sure to take advantage of this.
PLACES TO VISIT IN WASHINGTON, D.C.
Library of Congress The interior of the library was designed by three 30-something year olds and is beautifully crafted with so much symbolism embedded in the architectural design
Lincoln Memorial Not only is this a beautiful memorial, but it also gives you a great view of Washington Monument and Capitol Hill (also reminds me of Elle Woods confiding in Abraham Lincoln in Legally Blond)
White House Self explanatory...
WWII Memorial This memorial is fairly new and quite large. It is very beautifully designed.
Korean War Veterans Memorial This was one of my favourite memorials. The memorial has life-sized soldiers trekking out of the woods along a large wall with names of soldiers -- the entire layout of the memorial is very moving.
Capitol Hill Not only is this building such a monumental part of the city, but it also reminds me of House of Cards (I could almost hear Frank's voice as we drove past it).
Georgetown Cute little town with lovely stores, restaurants, and historic homes. It's a great area to roam the streets.
Air & Space Museum Definitely a cool visit for all those space-lovers...
Great eat: Al Tiramisu in Dupont Circle...YUM
I recommend putting Washington on your destination list. There’s a lot to do for everyone and is all around a great city to visit. Whether you want to sight see, or take in some of the nightlife at Dupont Circle, it is a lovely vacation for all.
